Straight out of Leftfield
As my phone buzzed for the first time this morning, I wondered what bill I had not paid, which institution had been ignored, who had wanted a piece of The Bagel. But what better way to start the day than a text from The Dave that read,
‘Have Spurs just signed a Brazilian left winger?’
It’s hard to tell which part of this question is the best bit. Brazilian? Left winger? Let’s not over analyse here. It’s both and what’s more it’s the fact that we signed him at the expense of angry Paul Jewell’s Wigwam and our firmest of friends, the silent Arsene Wenger. It’s not like there were bids flying in for Leonardo Vitor Santiago, for that is his name but there were quite a few scouts seen at the Rat Verlegh Stadion (now there’s an attractive sounding place) over the last few months.
Leonardo, nicknamed Leo (imaginative eh?) is about 5′8″ and fairly meaty, carrying 72kg on his frame. He’s 23, he’s left sided and he’s Rio born and bred. Here’s his head…

…complete with trade mark Brazilian smile, the only difference being that his teeth do not look like they’ve been worked on by the same blind dentist that seems to have a monopoly out there but then it’s only a small photo and besides he hasn’t been marked by Ben Thatcher yet.
Ignore his Feyenord colours because although he’d been with them for 5 years, he’s been at NAC Breda since 2005. Strangely, his contract is up next year so we’ll be snatching him up in January for the nominal fee of around £750,000, mere fluff covered pocket change that falls out of Mr. Levy’s trousers as he goes to put them in his Zanussi 3000. For those undomesticated, that’s not a car.
So, is he any good. Well, he can run a little and make a decent pass…
…not too tricky.
He can score and injure himself at the same time…
…let’s hope he wont be showing us that little trick.
But he can do this and watch the replay carefully…
…that looks fun.
All in all he seems like a good enough catch. Let’s see if he works out.
At the copa, copacabagel.

Sounds tasty… Lennon and Lennonardo on the wings - has a ring to it!
I’m always worried when these things get reported as ‘Spurs sign X’ before the story goes on to say ‘Spurs maybe kinda wanna sign X’ before we then get a nice letter saying how X really wanted to sign for us but decided to go for someone else who doubled his wages etc. But this kid is no Rivaldo. Or with a bit of luck, he is!
I’m also quite dubious when I read that Arsenal were interested in signing him. It always makes me think ‘well why haven’t they?’.
Then again, we got Lennon, so just cos Wenger isn’t interested, doesn’t mean that a player isn’t the future of football.

Word has it Leo’s done the pre-contract paperwork, so it should be in the bag.
He may well be useless but at less than one mill…well…he’s worth a punt. Besides, I’d still rather him than Stewart Downing.

Ooooh, that injury looked nasty! Looks good though, will be well happy if he signs on. Isa Saalabi.

Tottenham’s bid for winger Leonardo has suffered a setback because the Brazilian is ineligible for a UK work permit until next summer. (Daily Star)
