Transfers Already?

So much transfer news today and so few column inches talking about the matters in hand, i.e. another loss to compound our 4 point, 3 goal depression. I’m sure we’ll all agree that the scoreline was a little flattering on Liverpool. It was always obvious we were going to go for broke after we went behind. We went for broke, we got broken. It’s a tough one to walk away from but thankfully, I’m not seeing a lot of panic out there amongst the fans and the players either as a matter of fact.

Fortunately, our next match is one that should give us all a nice warm glow and a few goals as well. It’s been a while since we had a European night at the Lane and The Bagel for one is very much looking forward to Thursday’s match up with Slavia Prague. They’re rubbish, we’ve already beaten them away from home and from what I hear, the majority of the away stand at WHL is going to be full of Yiddos desperate to see the game. If the players aren’t on form, they will be after a chorus or two from the 36,000 strong. League form will be forgotten and maybe improved upon off the back of a comfortable cup win. That’s The Bagel’s prediction anyway. You just see if I’m wrong.

So, four months to go until the transfer window opens with a frosty January draft and four players to consider already.

First up we’ve the latest English piece of hot stuff from the domestic lower divisions. His name, Matthew Jarvis. His age, 20. His position striker/winger. His head, rather like this…

…tiny. Definitely not Allardyce progeny. Actually, postage stamp of a photo aside, his head does look slightly disproportionately fat in a Wayne Rooney/Lou Carpenter from Neighbours kind of way. Let’s hope he plays more like the former.

Matthew’s come to light as top scorer for Gillingham so far this season with 3 to his name, as many as we’ve managed between our entire squad and rumour has it we had a bid turned down for him in the last gasps of the summer shopping spree. The good news is that Arsenal are in for him too. Why is that good news? Well, it’s not really but I wouldn’t worry about him going there instead. He doesn’t look pretty and athletic enough to while away Wenger’s slower hours in the darkness of the Emirates boot room. What’s more, he’s English and young, which is more our calling card. The only question is, can he actually play? Well, can he punk? Who knows? Hot stuff in League 1 but just take a look at the difference between a Premiership Rasiak and the one tearing it up in the Championship just now. Anyone who saw the giant Pole away at Fulham last season will know all too well what I’m talking about. It don’t mean nothing till you done it at the top.

As if not content with competing with one Champions League club for a youth signature, it looks like we may be going head to head with Germany’s finest. Dag Alexander Olsen (is that a first name or a derogatory tag given on his last visit to Australia?) is a 17 year old striker currently plying his trade at Norweigan side Gjøvik-Lyn; glad I don’t have to try and pronounce that one. Bayern Munich and our good selves are chasing this kid, who has been described by his agent as the best thing he’s ever seen in this business but then he would, wouldn’t he? Does he come with a note from his mum as well?

Apparently, we’ve been buttering him and his family up with a box for the game against Fulham the other weekend. Not sure the result would have encouraged him any and I’ve no idea if the foods that good either. So far Levy & Co. have neglected to try and butter The Bagel. I’m more of a salt beef man anyway.

From Scandykid to wonderkid. Blaise Matuidi is the exciting prospect of the day. He’s French, he’s 19, he’s described as a very talented midfielder but what I want to know is, is his name pronounced ‘Blaze’? I’m imagining a French version of Aaron Lennon, who actually leaves a path of flames in his wake. I don’t think the ground staff would be too happy about this but how good would that look at night games?

Somehow I can’t help thinking that actually he’s yet another central midfielder and with a price tag of around £8m and a comment from his agent on an apparent failed bid from our club in August that goes:

“It’s true Spurs wanted Blaise. They’re continuing to follow him but there are other clubs interested.”

that in reality, he’s neither what we need nor a player that we’re going to get anyway. Well, here’s his head all the same.

The last bit of speculation and one that mixes me with a cocktail of nostalgia and despair, rather like a school reunion, is the prospect of spell number three at WHL for Teddy Sheringham. I think we’re all familiar with his head. Oh ok, what the hell…

Not one ours unfortunately.

The Bagel’d love to have him back at the club but purely just to be there. I wouldn’t want him to actually play. We’ve got four strikers that are better and a couple of young un’s that don’t need another obstacle between themselves and a game. We love you Teddy but it’s just too much of a step back, don’t you think?

Oh, Bagel, Bagel…

The Bagel.

We may need someone to cover for Ledley King…

What’s this? What’s this? An injury? A transfer rumour or just a precaution? The Bagel has not wind of this.

    The Bagel

  3. Smart Says:

Rumours are he ended training early on Monday with a bad injury. First rumours were broken leg, then cruciate ligament, then a bad twist\sprain.

Nothing confirmed yet, so in that respect no news is good news, but we will see if he is playing Thursday night…

[...] Finally in today’s transfer pot, there’s been a rumour that Gillingham have received offers from both the scummers and ourselves for their hot little winger, Matt Jarvis but according to Gill’s boss, Ronnie Jepson, that just ain’t so: [...]
