Who Stole the Cakes?

We did! Great bonus of 3 points at Villa and that doesn’t happen very often, even in better seasons. This made up for the draw at Sunderland which could have been better.

It’s a good run. No point in getting carried away, but let’s just carry it on.

Parts of the team are working better and apart from makings things happen – Lennon twice – Jenas was well forward, where players should be more often, and putting his head in where it hurts. Of course, against some teams you’d also get your head kicked in!

Robbie’s doing nicely now but actually that shot wasn’t going in, so well done Darren.

Still some way to go but it wasn’t premature to talk of next season. We have to finish this one as best we can, but have to plan a short-term and a long-term future – something that’s clearly been missing for the last couple of seasons. Sell a number of players and then buy three back the same season or the one after?

We’ve seen enough changes in recent years. There’s only one more necessary in the future, apart from seeing Spurs at the top that is, and I don’t think I need to spell that out, do I? We’re hopefully going to change the ground, we’ve changed a bus load of managers, players, directors of football, even bakers – now what hasn’t changed? A bit of stability would be a nice change.

Jenas was well forward……But he is still shit

  2. Glory Glory Says:

It shows where we are weak when Jenas is our 1st choice CM… That, plus one more top quality striker to replace Bent and I think we have enough to challenge for top 6 next season

  3. farah Says:

What do you guys think of Pavlyuchenko? Does he deserve another season? Personally, I’m not entirely convinced he is our man - or that the English game suits him at all. But I’d love for him to prove me wrong.

Top 4 next season at the expense of Chelsea or le Arse - and this time, it’s going to be for real. :p

  4. Wattson Says:

I have to say that after the last two seasons, I will not be getting ahead of myself and tipping us to claim a European spot.. although I will always be hopeful and optimistic.
I think Pav deserves another season. Next year will be what you can judge him on. I agree with the Platzel that a bit of stability is what we need and we should shy from making massive wholesale changes. Address the issues we have and build a team rather than buy one.

  5. sputnik Says:

You guys make me laugh sometimes

IF, we survive and stay in the Premiership, we can look at building and improving on our squad - but talking about International (or fringe International) players like Pavlyuchenko and Jenas not being good enough for Spurs is insane!

But right now - we could still be playing in the Championship..
When will we get a reality check on what is good enough for Spurs?
At this moment we have players most teams (including the top 4) would love to have - be more positive about it!
We’re now starting to grind out victories and our players and formations are starting to gel, work and produce results..

A little rant - but as fans, we could do with being a bit more positive

  6. The Futures Lilywhite Says:

Gotta agree with Sputnik, afterall Jenas did pop up to nick that goal and unsettle Villa early on: yes he may be a bit up and down, but he gets stuck in and works as hard as any other player.

As for Pav, next season will be his time to prove himself, also he’ll have to work harder to get a place ahead of the other strikers, (remember Defoe will be back again)

Anyway hope we continue this run against the blue scum on Saturday!

    good reading here

although i’m surprised not to see Justin Edinburgh or Clive Wilson in there!

  8. Hornchurch Yids Says:

    Sputnik

Thanks for the link. It would have to be a much longer list if it were to include the likes of John Lacy (maybe before your time?) and Paulo Trammezani. More like a top 500 of Spurs worst players. Andy Booth and Gregorsz Rasiak would have to be in there.

I’m not sure about Justin Edinburgh’s inclusion though? For all that he lacked in talent he made up for in fighting spirit. Clive Wilson ????? maybe.

  9. Glory Glory Says:

For sheer talent & ‘Spurs magic’ (obviously not legendary status though), I personally would include Berbacunt in the top 50 players. And bottom 50, for totally different reasons!

Berbatov??????? Undoubted footballing genius but he wasn’t with us for long enough, and for some of the time while he was with us he didn’t want to be, so not sure if he earns the right to be in a top 50?

A top 50 of traiterous slags, he’s a shoe in.

  12. Hornchurch Yids Says:

So, how do we see the game panning out tomorrow?

I might have to anwser my own question if nobody else is out there.

  13. oog Says:

1-1. We’ll be up and at em, we’ll get an earlyish goal through Keane, they’ll then dominate the second half and Drogba will get a header from a corner.

  14. oog Says:

And we’ll fluff a last minute one on one to win it.

  15. Glory Glory Says:

2-1 Spurs. Renewed confidence in my camp!! :)

  16. Hornchurch Yids Says:

    oog

Couldn’t you be a bit more specific?

I’m sure we can get something from this game. No more “it’s so easy” from the West London chavs. In Palacios and Jenas we should be able to compete with the Chelsea midfield. Lennon to torment Ashley Cole, along with the crowd giving him a good baiting and it could just work out.

ah! fuck it! 3 - 1 Spurs. C’mon you lillywhitessssssssssss!

Interesting Fact: Spurs have not lost a game in the 21st Century when Adie has been in the stands

  22. farah Says:

Wow, Signor Capello finally pays attention - and about bloody time! Although I am a wee bit nervous about letting our (Club) Captain off into the big bad international football world… but isn’t it fantastic that after such a long time, he’s finally being acknowledged as one of the top 23 English players?

(Although having had a terrible two years with Signor Capello at Juventus, I am doubtful he will actually make the right team selection come match day… but as always, love to be proven wrong!)

  23. oog Says:

Adie, I do NOT second Dude’s comment!

Anyway, very happy to be proved very specifically utterly wrong.

I’m not saying he was THE star man, but once again BAE is beginning to look the part.

Am I now the only tottenham fan who is still looking down the table as much as up? And even I think I am only doing this out of habit!

Although it is a scandal that a team like tottenham has now dropped out of the top half of the table. Redknapp out.

  24. The Futures Lilywhite Says:

”3 Point Lane” seems a distant memory these days ;)

  25. oog Says:

Once again - Chelsea fans were abysmal.

Of all the big clubs, they are perhaps the least impressive set of fans. Whether they win or lose.

  26. Hornchurch Yids Says:

A week is a long time in football blah blah blah.

Last week before the Villa game I asked the question how close to the bottom would we be at the end of the season. Well, 6 points later and the question needs updating.

How high up the table will we finish?

I’ll settle for finishing above West Ham and in the top half.

  27. TobytheYid Says:

oog - of course you’re not the only one still looking down. Until we hit over 40 points, I shall be consistently worrying.

It would be poetic justice if we made 7th - as WE made that a euro spot this season - but I really think we are too far down the season to actually be competitive for that.

SO Liverpool on the last day - let’s hope they’ve stopped scoring 17 goals a game by then, eh?!

  28. Glory Glory Says:

It’s funny (and great) how the expectations have suddenly gone from 17th to 7th! I think the players will probably still lack the belief to get much higher in the league. I know we are only 3 points off 7th at the moment, but we have probably the hardest run-in of those around us. Realistically I’ll go for us finishing 10th now, possibly 9th. Where our goal diff was advantageous in the relegation fight, it would hinder us in the fight for 7th I reckon.

I re-read that and it sounds a bit negative, but fuck it… I’m just happy we will almost certainly be playing Prem League footie next season and just hope all the craziness of transfer & manager merry-go-rounds is over. Change 1 or 2 personnel in the summer (EARLY) and integrate them quickly into the system.
I will be very surprised if both Bent & Pav are still with us. Do we really need a replacement though? Keane, Defoe, Pav or Bent and Obika is a decent enough set of forwards in my opinion, especially with no Europa League

so, just reading that Ledley has been sent back to Spurs from the England camp..
i hope this doesn’t bring him down too much - i’m sure his hopes and expectations had been raised by the, somewhat foolish, call-up in the first place.
it all does seem a bit stupid and possibly Ledley will go back to us on a bit of a downer - let’s hope not..

  40. Hornchurch Yids Says:

You’ll be telling us that Benty could pass as a top goal scorer next?

Actually, YOTN i did read somewhere that Bent fancies himself as an Hollywood actor after his football career. Maybe he too sees himself as the next Danny Glover.

No doubt he will score for fun in another team but I think his days are numbered in lillywhite.

Coming to a screen near you, Darren Bent the goalscoring machine. A work of complete fiction.

  41. Glory Glory Says:

I agree Hornchurch… no way Bent will play 3rd or even 4th fiddle next year. Expect him to be replaced with Sandra Redknapp!

And I know we seem to have a penchant for re-signing players, but there is one more I would love to see at Spurs again…

    STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED

Come on ‘Arry & Levy, sort it out!

  42. oog Says:

I read something the other day about Steed having more assists than anyone else in the premiership - can that be right?!

But this whole ‘left sided’ problem. I think its solved - Modric is making that position his own, and his playing there also takes care of the problem of him being too slight to play in centre mid.

I also still think Bale might yet be a left midfielder rather than a left back.

I think key areas to strengthen this summer are central mid (I still think Jenas has a future, but not as an automatic pick!), striker and possibly left back, but BAE is starting to look like we should maybe stick with him. Beyond that - lets not do too much, eh!

  43. oog Says:

See what I did there? I completely ignored Jamie O’Hara as a long term prospect.

Does anyone out there think he’s got it in him to be one? At the moment he’s a squad player. And thats when we struggle. I know its harsh, but there it is…

  44. Hornchurch Yids Says:

I think O’Hara does have a future with us. He is the kind of player that ‘Arry trusts and really prefers. So, I’m sure Jamie will be told that he has a future by the boss. Personally, I think he has been really effective as an “impact” substitution. His introduction late on to a game can really add some pace and drive. I’m thinking West Ham away. Also, he may well improve. He is still a young lad.

I would still be keen to sign a centre back. We would be struggling if both Woody and Leds were both out injured and with their injury records this is quite possible.

  45. oog Says:

I think his attitude and his commitment are going to give him a decent career in the game. Possibly at premiership level, possibly championship. And he’s definitely good enough to ‘do a job’. I just think he’s a bit limited. I hope you’re right and I’m wrong, HY. I often am.

With the centre backs, its a bit tough. If we want to hold on to Dawson (who must be a bit pissed off that he doesn’t get a game when he’s been our 3rd or 4th best player this season) he has to be at the very least third choice, so who do we sign who will be happy to come in and be fourth choice? Perhaps thats what Corluka is and because he is also a right back he accepts this.

Mind you, as with BAE or Jenas or O’Hara or lots of other of our players, if we can sign someone better than Dawson or Corluka, then sod it - just cos I like them, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be ruthless.

  46. Wattson Says:

    Hi guys. Been a while.
I agree with you HY, I like O’hara and I think he is just the sort of player that Harry goes for.
Maybe a CB is needed but can’t Corluka also slot in there? With an abundance of right backs that should give us enough cover. Do you think we will offload Hutton or Chimbonda in the summer?

  47. Hornchurch Yids Says:

I was forgetting about the versatility of Corluka, so that solves the centre back position. He has been excellent for us too so I’m sure he could do a really good job in the middle. Also, I’m sure Dawson will get plenty of games next season. I am quite amazed that Ledley has played so many games without pulling up. Long may it continue but surely he will do himself a mischief getting out of the bath in pre-season.

Has ‘Arry seen much of Hutton apart from in the treatment room? I hope he gets his chance. He looked decent enough when he first joined.

As for Chimbo, well he was just a panic buy as back up for the defence but both Woody and Ledley have been keeping fit so we didn’t need him after all. No doubt he will throw a strop and that will give ‘Arry all the ammo he needs to send him on his way, probably back to Wigan.

Taarabt is doing well at QPR. Will he get another chance? How about Gio? Will Bostock get a chance next season?

We are blessed with excellent young prospects. Maybe this will be the downfall of O’Hara. Bostock will be the bollox? Or not.

  48. Wattson Says:

I certainly hope we hang on to the youngsters and give them more of a run. Next year hopefully we wont find ourselves in the predicament of 2 points from 8 games and therefore can give them a shot.

I’d like to see more of Obika. Seems quite promising. Theres been talk that Gio will be moved on which I hope isnt true.

  49. Hornchurch Yids Says:

    Agreed, Wattson.

I imagine we will need to raise funds before we can spend. This also may give the young uns a chance. Sell Bentley, Hudd, Bent, Chimbo. This may gives us some cash to buy a couple of players. Just as importantly, it might promote some of the youngsters up the pecking order.

  50. Glory Glory Says:

As much as I like Hutton, I have a feeling he will be going back up north as I have heard rumours that he has struggled to settle in the south. Too warm for him perhaps? Not enough deep-fried Mars bar outlets? Who knows, but what that means is that Chimbo will remain for sure.

I don’t think too much tweaking is required, although if decent offers came in for any of the following, I feel they are all surplus to requirements:

    Huddlestone
    Bent
    Bentley
    Gilberto
    Zokora

That should realistically raise the funds to buy a decent CM to fight with Jenas & Palacios for a starting berth, and a LW (most likely Stewart Downing, once Boro are relegated).

‘But what about Modric?’ I hear you cry…

Well, I’m afraid to say, I think Mr Levy will stay true to form and will accept a decent offer for him, probably from Juve or another Serie A side. This would not be a total disaster in my opinion. He is not a natural left-sided player, but instead I think his best position is just behind a lone striker. With our current crop of strikers, I really doubt this system is one which Harry will employ. Being totally honest with myself, I just feel that Modric, for all his effort and guile, is not really a player for the PL… maybe at home he can shine, but how often have we praised him away from home this season?

I don’t think we need to replace Darren Bent. Keane, Defoe, Pav & Obika is enough striking talent to compete without European football in my opinion.

I don’t know where Corluka prefers to play, but he is certainly enough cover for the CB position.

So with that in mind, the first choice XI for next season should be almost identical to the current one. Add a couple of signings for depth in key areas and I think we are set to trouble the top 6 again:

    Gomes
    Corluka
    King
    Woody
    BAE
    Lennon
    Palacios
Jenas (hopefully will be challenged by a new signing for his place)
    Bale (or O’Hara/Downing?)
    Keane
    Pav/Defoe

  51. Hornchurch Yids Says:

    GG

Can’t agree with you on the Modric question. He is a gem and we should make sure we hang on to him. It would be a mistake to sell him. I doubt any Serie A team would be able to stump up the cash anyway, unless one of those clubs get a bumper windfall from the overspending Man City.

We have played our best football with Modric in the team. He gives us that bit of magic. His first season in the prem was always going to be a learning curve and i think he has done remarkably well. With Luka we have real creativity and attacking options. What other player do we have with such skill and vision? He could just be our new Ossie!

All together now! “Luka’s going to Wembley is knees have gone all trembly………”

  52. Dude Says:

I hear our loanees are doing really well at their respective clubs. Looks like we might get a few youth products coming through the ranks.

  53. Hornchurch Yids Says:

    Dude

Hope you are right. At West Ham ‘Arry was very good at giving the young talented players the chance to prove themselves. Carrick, Cole and Lampard. I hope he shows the same faith in some of our lads. How will we know if Bostock is good enough until he gets some games in the first team? The same for Gio and Taarabt.

I have a feeling that ‘Arry is more concerned with playing the tried and tested players rather than taking a chance on a young un. After all, at West Ham they didn’t have any better players to pick from other than the kids.

  54. Glory Glory Says:

HY - I’d be surprised if most didn’t agree with me about Modric to be honest!

If we do hang onto him, I’d would prefer to see him playing in the middle than on the left. He needs to be in and around the box, not putting in crosses.

  55. Wattson Says:

Darren Bent is now injured while training with England. Is Capello training these boys two hard or what?

  56. Wattson Says:

    *too hard

  57. Hornchurch Yids Says:

He then told me that you either KNOW god or you don’t. And that I should read some book that I then (g)oogled and seemed to be about an Australian murderer. Of herons or people, I don’t know. Shantalah, or something like that. Then he ‘disconnected’ me.

In real life, I don’t think I would forgive someone for murdering a heron. Unless they were planning on eating it.

However, as regards a match report, well I’m feeling pretty gutted after the game, so how about a brief resume?

The morning started at 6:05 when my clock radio very kindly reminded me that I had a small mountain of paperwork on my desk that, if left any longer was to gain EU status… Perhaps I should’ve left it, I may have been entitled to a grant or something. Paperwork started at 7:05 following something resembling coffee from the vending machine. I found it hard to concentrate, my mind constantly wondered on to the really important stuff of the weekend… The Game… I stole myself away to the present task “Get the bloody paperwork done, get home, quick breakfast lovingly prepared by Mrs YOTN washed down with a large cup of rosie, shout Mini Yid & set off for the hour drive to slackburn” I concentrated so much that my head hurt, but the paperwork was completed by 9:00 I set off for home, only to realise halfway home that I had to collect a parcel from the post office for my beloved Mrs YOTN so I put my foot down a bit… a lot actually. I ran in the sorting office only to meet a small queue of 1… I was short on time & patience. The bloke behind the counter was very much of the jobs worth fraternity & did his best to be as slow as possible. I collected the parcel very much in the manner of a runner in a relay race. back home, Mrs YOTN asks me to pop to the bookies to put on bets for her & Mini Yid for the national… Aaaarrrgggghhh, can’t you pop in & do it? I asked her as calmly as I could muster. I’ve never been in the bookies in my life & wouldn’t know what to do & besides, it’s a man’s thing. I’ll get your breakfast on while you’re in the bookies. I drove to the bookies, parked in the nearest available piece of road to the bookies (double yellow), only to see a parking warden entering my car’s reg in his hand held instrument of torture. He must have had a good servicing from his wife last night because he told me I was in luck by returning before he had pressed the “enter” key. I returned home, ate my marvelous breakfast, gulped down my cup of rosie. “Mini Yid, if you’re not ready now i’m going without you” He was in the car already!

Drove at a rate that was probably legal in certain countries, parked up, made our way to the ground

We found our seats, top row of the lower tier, some short geezer was making good use of the metal advertising hording behind us to keep the beat of all of the main songs of the day. Robbo got a good welcome from the Spurs faithfull, which was good to see. Spurs started brightly & continued in the same domiating path for nearly all the game. “We’ve got Ledley at the back” was ringing around the stand, helped by the short geezer only 4 seats away. We pushed, we dominated. Some slick, fast, attractive passing was occasionly let down with a stray one, but we were still very much on top. But it was Morten gamst formerly of the 80’s pop group Aha, that caused the first real threat on goal, slinging in a lng cross for Diouf, but he headed wide. Despite this slackburn were lookinf hurried & pressured, whereas Spurs were more relaxed, but with a sense of purpose. Later, Robbo made a marvelous reflex save from close range to deny Bent. Referee Paul Walton awarded Spurs a questionable penalty after Little Aaron’s cross made contact with Givet’s arm. Keano stepped up… Ball in net… We all went mental… End of

the slackers nearly drew even with Diouf, but he only managed to send the ball sailing over the bar. Spurs never finished off the slackers with a second goal, Keano didn’t seem to be on his absolute top form, though as usual you couldn’t fault his work rate. This came to bite us firmly on the arse, when ref Walton double yellowed Palacios for a very questionalbe offence, I thought it was an ok challenge as did all around me not to mention the 2victim” David Dunn, who walked to Wilson & shook his hand, poor Wilson walked. Less than 2 minutes later we were pegged back courtesy of McCarthy, looking like what was left of the game was to play out for an anoying draw. Spurs were still causing problems despite the disproportionate numbers. But with just a minute left of normal time, a poorly dealt with corner resulted in a second goal for the home side.

The journey home was a quiet one. I’m sorry for the hap hazard match report, but I’m gutted, shocking refereeing, but we should’ve & could’ve put the game out of reach.

    Top skils YOTN!

I can’t believe we got nothing from the game. Well, actually, I can.

Time for Jenas to move on??

  74. Glory Glory Says:

Toby, are you kidding? I thought JJ had a decent game.
Bent & Lennon had far worse games.

In any case, we were robbed. 50% due to dodgy ref, 50% due to not finishing them off when we had the chances.

A good win against the Spammers next week and this will all be forgotten though.

We played some really nice stuff yesterday, so although the result is disappointing, there are good signs for next season.

    Glory,

He did. I mean with all the speculation surrounding him - some of which is in today’s papers - is it time to cash in? His performances have been patchy (OK, this season has been a bit of a disaster for all, nearly all)

Continuing my gloomy view, I’m sorry, but I can’t see a win coming against the Irons.

Bent really needs to go. We have Bentley, who in theory, should be as good/better than Lennon - Should he go aswell??

  76. oog Says:

I thought for 80 minutes we looked as solid, snappy and committed in terms of closing the opposition down as we have done in a long long long time. Jenas included. I think we should stick with him.

Its unfortunate we caved in after the sending off, and its unfortunate that Gomes followed up a wondersave with another flap at a corner. I keep changing my mind about him. I really like him, I want him to succeed but how many opportunities do you give him before we accept we can’t carry a Brazilian David James (circa early 2000s)? Its also unfortunate we didn’t kill the game off when we should have done.

But overall, I thought it was a heartening performance from a team that looks like its adapting to its new, more settled, shape, and it came just at the right time for a defeat to not be as painful as it might have been just a month ago. Still painful though!

  77. Dude Says:

Thanks yotn. Pity about the result but it doesnt feel so bad knowing we at least put a good performance in. Yes we should of got the second and still think we need a quality striker for next season. Im feeling confident on beating the spammers but i think they about due a victory sometime soon. I guess europe is out of reach now but that might actually turn out to be a good thing.

  78. Glory Glory Says:

Agree dude. The Europa league is such a waste of time in my opinion. You have to play half a season’s worth of games to win it and even then you don’t get the holy grail - CL qualification. Why oh why did UEFA not bring in such a rule to revive this dying competition? No one really takes it that seriously anymore do they?
It’s all about the CL unfortuantely and that is where we need to be.

Re-build in the summer and get the mentality of the players right. Any slouchers can fuck off. I’m talking about Bent & Bentley mainly, but Huddlestone is moving closer to that list and for all his faults, I do think Jenas wants to do well at least. He just needs to be coached to be more positive and attacking than he is. Let Wilson do the tackling and mopping up and then JJ can play more advanced or make more forward runs (a la Aston Villa).

  79. Yid of the Norf Says:

Thanks guys, I know it wasn’t the best of match reports but it was my first & when the Bagel moved on I was one of those that said he would put the effort in, well I’m a bit overdue. I’ll try to do a report for the Liverpool game, tickets allowing ofcourse

  80. Yid of the Norf Says:

Spurs stick it up the spammers & go 8th
