Prices have gone up - if we want to compete with the best, then we have to pay like them too. Berba was a steal at ~£11m, but he was a gamble. He's worth the thick end of £40m now! We just paid (up to) £10m for an unproven 17yo left back!! Just to add a bit of context to the debate. Don't get me wrong, I'm firmly of the opinion that we have other holes that need filling first, most notably on that notorious left wing, and sadly a competent CB for WHEN King gets injured. Possibly a centre-mid too (unbelievably, considering how many we've collected over the seasons) - although there's a difference of opinion as to whether that should be a playmaker or a defensive type blokey. Whilst I'd love to see Sneijder pull on the white shirt, I'm more in favour of the latter, but I digress... Thing is though, with Mido's likely departure and the fact that if we were to lose Berba through injury/suspension/fatigue, we'd be screwed. Get him in, and tie Defoe down too. Literally if needs be.
