Sweet Talk

Another weekend and another result that wasn’t quite the season kick starter we were all hoping for. Languishing at fifth from bottom seems a hell of a climb from last season’s heady fifth from top and with only two league goals to our name, the atmos is a little on the thin side down at WHL.

Goalless draws aren’t exactly the stuff that dreams are made on. When the crowd doesn’t get to go crazy, they get frustrated, when they get frustrated they get quiet and the all important 12th man effect disappears. It wouldn’t be so bad if we were just hitting the net once in 90 minutes but a football match is a fair old commitment week in week out when you’re not even reaping a moments joy.

But what better way to sooth our twinges of anxiety than a full verbal massage from two of our fan favourites? Ledley and Dawson (aka Safety First) have made The Bagel smile this morning. When I rose today, last night’s water in hand, wrapped in a dressing gown still in need of a wash and rebreaking a toe I so cleverly stubbed last week, I was not exactly in finest mood and had little hope for what I’d find in the news today. But a quick bit of sweet talk from Martin Jol and good couple of quotes from our back two has gently lifted me and settled me back on the rails again with a firm but careful push to get me on my way. My beef is fresh, my bagel warm and lightly toasted.

My lips turned and toe numbed and forgotten as I read some quotes from Safety First.

“Ledley King is fantastic. When I broke through at Forest I was playing alongside Des Walker week in, week out and that was great for me, helped me a lot.

“Des had all that experience and played regularly that season, a model professional.

“I then came to Spurs and played alongside Ledley. He’s been here all his career, played at the top level consistently and gives so much confidence not just to me but to the whole team.

“I remember the first game I saw Ledley play live at Spurs was against Portsmouth just after I signed and I was in the stands - he was different class.”

See now, there’s two very good things going on here. Firstly, we’re all reminded of how wonderful our club captain is and I can’t help have a tear in my eye as my brain replays it’s own personal montage of tackle after tackle that he has made. It doesn’t have any music to go with it just now but I’d probably opt for ‘Nobody Does It Better’ by Carly Simon.

The second point to note is the quality of player that Michael Dawson has been along side throughout his career and the knowledge that although certainly a ‘beefier’ type of defender, to put it nicely, there’s excellent hopes that he will only grow in ability and confidence and this central partnership will go from strength to strength. Now, if he can just direct some of that aerial supremacy goalward, I’d be an even happier man.

So, fresh from one little pick me up I move to another. My faith affirmed in Ledley King, I’m willing to believe anything the man says. If he told me it was xmas tomorrow, I’d be out there on Oxford Street, running around from shop to shop in one big tourist melee and getting home to find I’ve spent £200 on clothes for myself and start wrapping some I.O.U’s.

“We’ve brought in new players and lost Michael Carrick. It can take a little while to gel.

“We’re still confident of winning back-to-back games and climbing straight up the table.”

Suddenly, all frustrations were gone. I had no idea of the stench of my clothes, was gleefully lapping at the smee encrusted rim of my glass and even chewing on its nourishing floaty bits. Just the phrase ‘winning back-to-back games’ is enough to get my blood pumping through my blue and white heart again.

With the Panorama bung special on tonight and not a sniff of an implication of Levy and the crew and those words of honey poured through my ears, The Bagel’s feeling a whole lot better with Sunday’s game fading into the night. Ful-who?

Nobody does it bagel.

The Bagel.

Just the word “Winning” is enough to get my blood pumping.

    What a bleak week.

Im struggling to keep enthusiatic with the football. Maybe the World Cup took its toll on me after all?

England dont really interest me that much, so the premiesrhip break after 2 games was annoying for me. Spurs arent firing on all cylinders - YET. People are calling for Martin Jol’s head.

    Is it May yet?

Crazy isn’t it? Most stable we’ve been in years. Four mediocre results and people want blood.

Even if he did go, who else do people want?
