No Lennon Loss

I find myself with rather a lot of free time today. Why? Because I have no friends? No. As much as The Bagel may have distanced himself from many non-footballing minds over the past years, he does not, as yet, sit rocking back and forth in a corner of his Tottenham flat, reciting game statistics from the 1901 season, dressed in Spurs woolly hat, Spurs scarf, shaking an old rattle every ten minutes on queue. A social life I have. Am I suffering from Pilsner poisoning and unable to do anything aside crawl to a bar and order more beer? No, not true either.

The reason is simply that I did not account for the switching of game dates from Saturday to Sunday due to our Thursday night UEFA fixture. That’s a really nice thing to say. Thus, I have a large Tottenham shaped hole in my afternoon and shattered plans for a boozy Grand Slam Sunday down my local. But all is well, for instead, you lucky few, you band of brothers, it makes today a day of double Bagel; twice the beef and twice the yeast. Not only some good old fashioned weekend build up but the first Eurobagel match report. Stay tuned for that hot entry.

But back to the matters of the day. As we’re all aware, we’ve got Coleman and his lads tomorrow. Since the loss of Saha, they’ve never been a great outfit but very often prove a thorn in our side. We haven’t beaten them at Craven Cottage, the world’s friendliest ground, for far too long and they’ve done us twice at home in the last three years. They’ve got some serious gaps in their squad this weekend, notably Bullard, Papa Bouba Diop (great name) and of course, Malbranque and Routledge and we aren’t in exactly in the best of league form ourselves.

On the other hand, Coleman & crew secured a fantastic away win at Filthcastle last weekend, so good after last season’s horrific away form, which is probably a harder place to go for a London club. Lots and lots of travel and no derby wave to ride. The Fulham absentee list does also hand a chance to ex-Spur and past favourite of The Bagel, Michael Brown to strut his stuff and show MJ and ourselves alike what a mistake it was to lose him. Expect more shoulders than an episode of Dynasty.

On the N17 side of things we’ve got a nice European away win under belts and in our beds to keep us warm at night but a couple of injury worries of our own. Berbatov is once again a doubt and my money says he’ll be rested in favour of Mido. Why risk him? For the first time in years, we’ve got perfectly adequate cover. The other injury and main news right now as far as the world is concerned is the fact that little Aaron is going under the knife today and will be out for 5 or 6 weeks but this worries The Bagel not.

No, I don’t so much see this as a loss of a star player as a fantastic opportunity for us to see that our side is good enough without him and much more excitingly, for other midfield players to prove their worth and stake a claim. Ghaly and Murphy’ll get a look when they’ve shaken their minor complaints and most importantly, Zokora and Huddlestone, a central pairing The Bagel has high hopes for, will get a chance to gel. All of this should keep the squad happy. I guarantee a smaller exodus than thought come January window time. It’s amazing what a little rotation can do. On the down side, we are now without a natural right winger but at least this balances our problem on the left. Expect some far forward full backs and some strange pegs in stranger holes when times get tough.

So, predictions? We’re going to do wipe the floor with them. We’re on a high right now or maybe just I am. I feel victory in the air. My crumbs are twitching. It’s just too good a weekend to have it ruined by an underdog club. The time has come. Our season begins tomorrow.

One large bagel with Cottager cheese.
