Seconds away, round 2
I could hardly sleep last night. It’s the first real game of the season and I’m as excited as a schoolboy on a gym rope. I starved myself of pre-season action and I’m just itching to get down to the Lane. There’s nothing like that welcome home as you climb the stairs to your block. I can’t help but quicken my pace, taking two or three steps at a time as I near the top. The muffle of the crowd gets clearer and clearer until your head’s inside and you reach the stereo sound. But the most beautiful treat of all is the pitch. The grass vibrates with a colour and a life. It’s dark, it’s light, electric and deep; there’s no greener green in the world. I’ll stand there for a while, drink it all in before I find my row, my seat, my crew. Everyone had a good summer? Any new faces? Any new haircuts? Yep. The Bagel’s looking forward to tonight. The only question remaining is over the result.
We all want to want to move on from Saturday’s game. We all know we have a chance to start the season proper tonight but we all know how bad runs begin. Which is it to be? Sheffield United are going to be just as physical as Bolton were, maybe even more so because they know that’s the only chance they’ve got. In fact, from the interview I’ve just seen with back room monkey Stuart McCall that’s exactly what they intend to do.
‘We know they’re a quality side and whatever they do we’ll make sure we’re in the right positions to snuff them out.’
Sounds like we’re in for a classic tonight. Perhaps and an adventurous 4-6-0 from our South Yorkshire visitors. Fingers crossed for an early goal; in our favour, of course.
The Blades are without Craig Short, their veteran defender but don’t get too excited, he was missing from their last game as well. Everybody’s favourite, Neil Warnock, is banned from the touchline but the same applies. Warnock’s done nothing to wrong me as yet but I’ve a feeling he’ll be making an enemy of The Bagel before long.
Sheffield United made an excellent account of themselves at home against one of this season’s most fancied teams. Let’s hope an away trip down south will take a little spring from their steps and if that’s not enough, I can recommend them a good hotel. The Marriott, Canary Wharf. Try the pasta.
Our only worry for tonight is The Yiddo. Our little assassin picked up a bruise to his foot on Saturday and faces a ‘late test’ before the game. I often wonder what this ‘test’ consists of. A train leaves Sheffield railway station at 4.45pm at a speed of 56mph they stop for a brew, some Eccles cakes and a discussion of how things were better in the old days. How many whinging northerners are on board? Answer Jermain, answer!
It’d be a shame to be without him. His partnership Berbatov is looking promising but obviously, with Keano available, we’ve got no real problems either way.
The good news is that Teemu Tainio is available again after a twisted ankle. The Bagel was very impressed with him last season. I love a hard worker. He’s got the ethic of Michael Brown and nearly Stephan Freund and thankfully more ability than both put together. Should MJ wish to sure it up tonight or just keep JJ on his toes, he’s an excellent option to have.
The only bit of transfer news of the day, apart from Newcastle signing Martins from Inter (they’re getting quite a frightening squad) is a few comments from Zdenek Grygera, with whom we we’re linked a little while ago. (See http://beefbagel.com/bagel/2006/08/the-bagel-today/)
The Czech defender has come out with a rather cryptic set of statements that have been construed as everything from a snub to a ‘come get me.’ This is the quote:
“Tottenham are a high quality team but England would not be my first choice, although I am not saying ‘no’. If you are choosing a club, you always consider if you know someone there. Tottenham have a Dutch coach and also Edgar Davids - they would be able to understand me. If there is an interesting and specific offer from a club that has a good reputation in Europe, I would not be against it. I have one year left on my contract and I am not willing to extend it so my future will be resolved next summer at the latest.”
About as clear as mud but the translation I believe goes a little something like this:
I’m definitely leaving Ajax. I’d rather stay on the continent and go to a team in the Champions League. I’m also aware that Ajax may be more in control of where I go. They know I’m not staying and their priority is to get good money for me sooner rather than later. This may indeed result in a move to England, which I would be quite happy to do. Spurs would be the natural choice but Chelsea and Liverpool have Dutch players too. They also play in the Champions League.
Not exactly what you would call a committed answer.
Nine days left of the window. Let’s see who squeezes through.
Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a bagel.
The Bagel.

You are right, there is nothing like the first HOME game of the season.
Walking up the steps from the confines of the understadium food places and toilets, then out into light. The muffled audio tape sound in an instant flicks into Dolby surround 5.1.
But that cant beat seeing rest of the stadium, the thousands of expectant fans, and the players coming out onto the billiard table of a surface.
Its a sensory overload - Im buzzing with excitement already!
Its also usually complimented with fine summer-like weather. Not tonight however.
We need a positive win tonight - Come on you Spurs.
