Big face, Big knot

My mate Jim’s right. I never used to be in the hating business but these days I’ve got a card, a secretary and majority shareholding stock in Hostile Bastard plc. For one, it’s anyone, who has the cheek to beat or say anything about our boys that incurs my wrath but on its own that would only be a mild, passing, niggling kind of thorn in my side. It’s the replay of these events in The Bagel’s mind, the details of the pain when I come to write my thoughts that stir them into full blown hatred. Where am I going with this? Big Face Sam, that’s where.

I never really had too much of a problem with the man. I’ve always admired the way he’s created good strong competitive sides with no cash and a bunch of past it problem players, Kevin Nolan aside. I’ve even admired the ways he’s a semi-professional darts player. But now just the thought of his ridiculous fat tie knot to match his ridiculous fat head is enough to get my teeth grinding. And his smug little smile as Ivan muppet head Campo drilled his chancer into our goal gets me reaching for my collection of voodoo dolls. His is the one with the particularly big head, of course.

Allardyce didn’t even say anything insulting against our Spurs in the post match interview. After waiting for the camera crew to switch to the wide angle lens to fit his huge noggin on your screens at home, he admitted that his team had played out of their skins and The Bagel would not disagree. It was just the way he made our MJ look. I’ve never seen that expression on his face. It was wide eyed panic. Disbelief at the two early goals and disbelief because he couldn’t work out what he’d done wrong.

We can sit here and bitch a little about certain performances from certain players but on the whole I think he made all the right moves. The Bagel will not agree with this talk about a poor performance from us. When we had the ball, which was most of the time, we looked fluent and that can only bode well. All of our signings knew what they were doing and all looked effective. We did look flimsy at the back, which is just an invitation to a team like Bolton and we sorely missed our King. We do need a left winger of sorts. We miss out on sustained attacks without one.

There’s only two players, who need a small word. Davenport in a lesser way needs to pull it together a bit. We need him to be our back up Ledley now and that means letting the opposition know he’s there. He looks like he’s got the skill, now let’s see a little steel.

Our other man is on thin ice. Jermaine Jenas needs to buck his ideas up. He’s had too much potential for too long and he needs to deliver on a regular basis. A lazy touch for the second goal and two spurned free kick chances are simply not good enough with a host of central midfielders breathing down his neck.

All in all I think we played just fine on Saturday. It was nice to go undefeated for a long period last season but it was the draws that got us in the end, not the losses.

Chins up one and all. That includes you MJ.

You can be my bagel anytime.

The Sheffield United match will be an interesting one. Hopefully Jol gave them a rocket after the Bolton match. Hopefully complacency hasnt set in after last seasons 5th place and an unbeaten pre-season.

Hopefully, 3 points and a decent performance will be forthcoming…

I too found myself hating Mr Alladyce after the game on saturday. It’s never really bothered me that much before, but have you noticed how his sentences go on and on for ever, as he adds in more phrases all starting ‘and of course…’. And of course (to coin a phrase) after the game in saturday he was slagging off Spurs. I hate that.

But my season predictions still stand - one result does not a season make. Bolton are still going to be off the pace this year, and the mighty Spurs will be there or thereabouts come the end of May…

This result (and the preseason) tells me that we’re ready for Europe but need a bit of time for the Premiership. The fact is that we looked soft against Bolton (Davids aside) and we were outmuscled and lacked imagination on the attack.

We looked great moving the ball around but time after time we would move the into midfield and then pass it back and around as if trying to find someone to take the initiative. Granted we Bolton threw everyone behind the ball every chance the got.

I’m not overly concerned since it was our new boys introduction to the Premiership and for the most part they were the best players on the day and they will get better.

However I expect that we’re going to see a lot more of Bolton style football from teams unable to compete with our passing style (eg Sheffield United) and we better get used to it in a hurry if we expect to match last season’s results.

    Like you said though……..Chins up!
