Five million pounds! Five million pounds! How on earth did Newcastle sign Damien Duff for £5m pounds? I’ve just watched the press conference at St.James’ Park to try to get my head around exactly how they got him so cheap and why on earth he went there?
The big phrase that came over and over from the Irishman, who looks like he never sleeps was that he, ‘followed his heart’ and yes, he probably did. He talked of what a massive club they are (!?) and how passionate the fans are. Well, yes I’d agree with that but personally I believe that it’s not a genuine passion for football but simply a place where northerners can huddle together for warmth on a Saturday afternoon and eat coal. Other factors seem to include his good friends, Stephen Carr, Scott Parker and Shay Gibbon er..excuse me Given along with the reasons laid out in an earlier post (see Mirror, Mirror on the wall) but somehow I can’t help feeling slightly responsible as part of a group pitchside on the Shelf who regularly teased little Damien with jibes such as ‘Come and tarmac my drive.’ Not exactly indicative of how I feel about the player but you know how it is. Anything to put a danger man off his game.
So, I suppose that covers the why. As for the how, well perhaps this is where the plot thickens. Freddy Shepherd made a point in the conference to publicly thank Chelsea for the way they helped, to the point where it seemed like they had done him a big favour and I’m sure we’d all agree that the price tag is proof enough of that. So why did Chelsea happily toss Duff over to Newcastle when they could have doubled their money with us or Liverpool? You should be somewhere near the answer by now. No? We’re a threat. Liverpool are most definitely a threat but we’re chasing and perhaps only a Duff short of having an amazing team and as we know, Chelsea just don’t sell to their rivals. We’re not the quite the danger to the Chelsea machine that I’d like to paint us to be but I think they made it a lot easier then they needed to make sure Duff went to Newcastle.
The only other left sider, with whom a link is still alive is Sorin and it seems we’re not the only ones in the running. Portsmouth continue to act like a sort little league Chelsea and are trying to throw their new found money Villarreal’s way but the main contenders and apparent leaders in the race are fittingly enough OAP Bolton and Big Face Sam. It’s not a major blow if that’s where he ends up. He’s a decent player but he’d only be a stop gap for us. All the same, expect some genuine Argie bargie over the next week or so. Sorin Wars begins.
However, the real summer blockbuster, over which our collective breath grows more baited by the day, seems to have entered the Ready Money Round. Some reports are talking of £20m for Carrick and others of a joint deal of Carrick and Defoe for £30m. It’s at this point that the money starts to look right. Carrick for £20m is probably a fair price and Fergus Ferguson says that’s as far as he’s going. Let’s hope he means it.
The Yiddo for an extra £10m doesn’t sound so good to me but the pressure is going to start to build if the van Nistelhorse leaves his Lancashire stables for the sweeter pastures of Munich, as is much expected. The plus side of this exit is that it could well force a move for Bayern striker Roy Makaay. Admittedly, his form has been a little indifferent, which caused him to miss the recent World Cup squad but he’s a quality player and perhaps a change of scenery and maybe even league could be just what he needs. He’s Dutch, he’s a big man striker but he’d have to be content to play second fiddle if Berbatov continues the form he started against Birmingham. What’s more there’d be no Champions League for him. Not a likely one really but we’d have one hell of a four man strike force.
