Eh, Toni?
I hate to admit it but if Arsene Wenger is after a player, you can bet your bottom dollar that they’re worth buying. The only bad signing he’s made, as far as I can remember, is the comical Pascal Cygan. I just love the look of confusion on his face when a player with the awesome skill and speed to match the likes of Duncan Ferguson rounds the stunned slaphead. He’s just so rubbish and slow, which is incidentally how I prefer Arsenal players to be. Unfortunately though, this is rarely the case and vast majority of the Wenger Boys are fast and French or at least French speaking. Emmanuel Eboue was bought for £1.54m. Now that is a smart buy.
Enjoy that Gooners. Look long and hard because. That’s as lyrical as I’m ever likely to wax about your unenlightened club.
The point of my pseudo praise, in case you thought your Bagel had taken leave of his senses, is the fact that a certain Curtis Davies has been in the sites of both Tottenham and Arsenal. The Highbury paedophile has been seen stocking up on his Werther’s Originals and waiting at the wire mesh fence of the West Bromwich training ground, hands shuffling in his pockets, presumably looking for his keys. Has been that is, until today. The Baggies have slapped a fairly ludicrous £10m price tag on Davies and Wenger has publicly opted out. I’d still welcome him at a slightly reduced rate. We’re not covered that well at centre back. It all gets a little untried and untested after the first three choices. Baby Face Gardener isn’t exactly perfect and Calum Davenport doesn’t look like he’s made the grade.
Another much wanted man is sensation of the World Cup, well if there was one, Franck Ribery but it seems all speculation with him has ended today. Marseilles president, Pape Diouf stated, presumably whilst not training with Bolton or Fulham,
“He will stay at Marseilles, no matter how high the offers are. Our intentions are to turn down any offer. He will not go.”
I would imagine he hasn’t received the call from Roman Abramovich yet then.
With another wing option down and to be honest I don’t think he was headed our way anyway, we really are just waiting on Duff. There was an amusing mini media circus at the Chelsea training ground today when Duff left early to ’sign for Spurs’. Chelsea later revealed that no such thing had taken place and that Damien wasn’t risked any further because….wait for it…..he had blisters. Ahhhh isn’t that sweet? With any luck he should be ours, blisters, bunions, warts and all by the end of the week. Apparently there’s some minor haggling going on. They want £11m we want £5m. I can understand wanting to think about things a bit if I were about to spent six million pounds more than I had intended.
Martin Jol may fancy saving a little of that money for a shopping spree Italian style. Nedved seems to have agreed to stay with Juve and see them through their dark times, no doubt much to the disappointment of my mate Jim, who to be fair was warming me to the idea of the Czech master. There have, however, been murmurings of Luca Toni. Now there’s a second big man striker that’d be a serious string to the Tottenham bow. 31 goals last season and at the age of 29 and what with Fiorentina being caught in the Italian meltdown, he may just decide that it’s time to make a move. The transfer fee would probably match his physical stature but it’d be worth it just to shout ‘Eh, Toni?’ at him in unconvincing Italian American accents. We may hear more about this one but I’ve got a feeling that this is story that sleeps with the fishes.
There’s a little more news on the Carrick saga but I don’t have the venom in me for that just now. Come visit me tomorrow and I promise a the full cocktail of poison.
Bagel out.
