Duff Man
So yeah, Duff eh? That seems to be the talk of the town this morning. £11m is a fair old whack but not unjustly so. Anyone who saw a Duff driven Blackburn take us apart on the last day of the season 3 or 4 years ago to the tune of 4-0 will be in no doubt of the nobbly Irishman’s abilities.
That was one nastiest atmosphere’s I’ve ever felt at WHL. There were voices spoiling for a few fights that day amongst and between the Tottenham fans. It was the anti-Hoddle lobby vs. those die harders who’d the legend week in week out back in the blinding days of the Diamond Lights. It was somewhat difficult to actually hear the salient points of each side’s arguments, if indeed there were any, what with my aural attention being distracted by the scores of season ticket books raining over my head and the odd stray one directly onto it. It was an empty gesture when you think about. It’s not that the season was over, it’s just that the cover of the books was horrible that year.
The only real question marks over this transfer, which by all reports is virtually done and dusted, are his long term fitness and the financial repercussions of the flopping out of another Spurs shaped wadge of fat, footy cash. As far as his fitness goes, yes it’s a worry but still worth the while. He’d obviously be the first choice, fit right into a 4-4-2 and key to that beautiful 4-3-3 that the big man craves so badly but how many 100% games will we get out of him? Well, your guess is as good as mine but I’d say half a season would be enough, provided we’ve got some cover other than the only kind of Reid you’d never see bend in the wind. Step up Reto Ziegler. Do you feel lucky? Well, do you punk?
So, that only leaves further fuel to the Carrick and Defoe mass panic, which is that of where are we getting this £30m that we’ve all but spent in transfers already? ‘Oh my God,’ cry everyone, broadsheet reporters too, shame on you, ‘that means we have to sell Defoe or Carrick or both!’ Err…hello? We’ve just signed a sponsorship deal with Mansion for £34m and a kit deal with Puma for God knows how much too. I think that’ll just about cover it with some change for a few younger players too.
